Illinois State University alumnus Jason Mack of Mack Glass will be creating a glass sculpture beginning Friday, Oct. 15, from 1 to 7 p.m., and finishing up from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 16, at the north end of the quad near Schroeder Hall.

As part of the Roll Out the Red Homecoming celebration, Mack will have his mobile glassblowing furnace on site melting thousands of recycled glass bottles at 2000 degrees Fahrenheit to create one of his signature installations.

“I am going to create the second installation in a series I call the “Thousand Year Old Gardens,” said Mack. “For this work I utilize industrial/commercial refuse such as rebar, shopping carts, sections of side walk and post-consumer glass to create a scene I imagine taking place a thousand years in the future. The glass becomes a natural living element that bends and reshapes manmade artifacts to its own will to create an ideal habitat for growth. This series explores the coexistence of nature and urban society while highlighting the temporality of human creations and the immutability and resilience of nature.”

The event is free and open to the public. People are encouraged to bring recyclable glass donations and view the sculpture as it is being created.
