An update from Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures alum Meghan Braffet ’13, who majored in German at Illinois State University. She also received the German Alumni New Student Scholarship. She planned to study abroad at the University of Bonn in 2011.
“After finishing at Bonn, my goal is to apply to the internship opportunities in Germany presented to me by Professor van der Laan to further improve my language skills and understanding of the German culture. Upon returning to the U.S. my goal is to teach German at a junior high/high school with hopes of someday teaching at the community college/university levels.
The professors at ISU are very enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and helpful. They are always willing to help and have made class so much fun. The German classes that I have taken are interesting, diverse in content, and really help to improve language skills and understanding of the culture.
The German section offers so many extra-curricular activities that give me the chance to improve my language abilities and understanding of the culture: bi-weekly film showings, weekly gatherings to meet fellow students while practicing speaking the language, and great study abroad opportunities.”
