Structural geologist and educator Tim Paulson will present “Recent to contemporary stress of the West Antarctic Rift from drill core and volcanic alignment studies” from 3-4 p.m. Friday, September 11, in Felmley Hall, room 133. The event is free and open to the public.
Paulson is a geology professor from the University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh. His talk will focus on efforts to determine the directions and relative magnitudes of forces acting on the continental crust in Antarctica. He will also discuss the contemporary stress field of the most continental areas in the world, documented by the World Stress Map Project.
His research focuses on understanding mountain building in North America, India, and Antarctica. Prior to joining the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh Geology Department faculty in fall 1999, he did a three-year, post-doctoral study at the Byrd Polar Research Center at The Ohio State University, where he began working on Antarctic stress field research.
