The Illinois State Physics Department’s Fall Colloquium Series kicks off Tuesday, with The University’s of Iowa’s Professor Steve Spangler, presenting “Plasmas in Space: From the Surface of the Sun to the Orbit of the Earth” at 4 p.m. Tuesday, September 22, in Moulton Hall, room 214.
Spangler, a professor of physics and astronomy, studies radio astronomy, plasma astrophysics, and space plasma physics. He and his students work with the Very Long Baseline Array and the Very Large Array at the U.S. National Radio Astronomy Observatory to measure the speed of the solar wind, the properties of turbulence, and the plasma state of the solar corona.
In this talk, Spangler will describe our understanding of the plasma state of the solar atmosphere and interplanetary space (also referred to as the ”solar wind”) between the sun and the Earth.
