The Department of Communications Sciences and Disorders has had a busy start to the semester.
CSD students, faculty, and the members of our National Student Speech-Language-Hearing Association (NSSLHA) have been involved in many ISU fall activities. NSSLHA kicked off the semester with their annual Family Day events. On Saturday October 3, NSSLHA held events starting at 8:30 a.m. and lasting until after lunch for students and their family members. Following breakfast and a social period for families and faculty to meet, Professor Ann Beck welcomed everyone to the event.
Next, sessions were set up where faculty members gave presentations on their different specialty areas in the field of speech pathology and audiology and the department’s academic advisor spoke about graduate school admission.
There were also tours of the department’s Speech and Hearing Clinic with hearing screenings done by the audiology graduate students. There were over 45 families in attendance and NSSLHA President Terra Horn commented that this event is special “because it not only was a chance to show our parents where we spend most of our time and introduce them to our professors, it was also a chance for students and parents both to learn more about the field from the amazing faculty here at ISU.”
NSSLHA was also involved in Homecoming week. They started out the week by decorating the clinic for the University’s decoration contest. On Tuesday of that week, NSSLHA and CSD faculty put together three teams that participated in the Redbird Rumble—one of the teams made top 20 of the night!
Another special contribution from CSD for the Homecoming events this year is our student and NSSLHA Executive, Sarah Sadler, was part of the homecoming court. Involvements such as these demonstrate that CSD students really know how to show their pride for ISU.
