Alternative Breaks (AB) is a student organization advised by Leadership and Community Connections that provides students of Illinois State University with opportunities to enact social change through community service.
Alternative Breaks hosts service trips to help meet needs of communities across the globe. Students can volunteer to help build homes for the homeless, feed hungry families, tutor young children, and much more.
Junior ASB Coordinator Kelli Ferraro says, “The work of Alternative Breaks really matters because it not only helps so many people and places that are in need, but it also inspires people to live active citizen lifestyles, and it teaches them about new social issues in the world around them.”
In honor of the 15-year anniversary of Alternative Breaks at Illinois State, Leadership and Community Connections launched a large fundraising effort in November to raise $15,000 for the 15 years they have been on campus. This money will be used to endow the Alternative Breaks Support Fund, which provides fee waivers for students who want to participate in a trip but cannot afford it on their own.
“Alternative Breaks is such an awesome experience and students learn so much. We want to make sure any student who wants to go on a trip can, regardless of their finances,” says Harriett Steinbach, coordinator for Leadership and Community Connections.
