See a free screening of “Reject” at the Normal Theater at 5:30 p.m. November 9, 2015.
The Department of Psychology, with the Graduate Association of School Psychologists and Psi Chi/SPA, will present a free screening of the documentary Reject at 5:30 p.m. Monday, November 9, at the Normal Theater.
The documentary focuses on ostracism and the effects of social isolation. Following the movie, there will be a panel discussion led by Eric Wesselmann that features the director of the movie, Ruth Thomas-Suh, as well as one of the researchers from the film, Kip Williams from Purdue. Additional panelists include Leandra Parris, who studies peer victimization, and Eros DeSouza, who will share information about workplace bullying.
Reject combines human interest stories about bullying and rejection with interviews of psychological researchers in the areas of bullying, rejection, and ostracism. It also includes interviews with educators who are implementing interventions in schools and with researchers who discuss overlaps between rejection and equal opportunity issues (e.g., discrimination) and criminal justice implications.
“At the essence of this film is the idea that interpersonal rejection has a profound impact on human life,” said Thomas-Suh. “We on the film team believe that Reject will come at a time when there is an urgent need in our society to address this—in our homes, in our schools, in the workplace and various institutions.”
