Anu Gokhale
Illinois State University’s Professor of Technology Anu Gokhale has been named a Fulbright Distinguished Chair to the University of Pernambuco (UPE) in Brazil.
The year-long appointment will allow Gokhale to develop tools and methods—specific to the region—to increase enrollment and improve the teaching of science, technology, engineering, mathematics and computing (STEM+C).
“This will provide an opportunity to address a continuing worldwide need for developing a larger, well-prepared workforce, and to apply the latest data mining algorithms and learning analytics research techniques to large datasets,” said Gokhale.
The Fulbright enables Gokhale to continue her work to increase diversity in the STEM+C fields. At Illinois State, she helped spearhead the creation of Teacher Education in Computer Science (TECS), a National Science Foundation-funded initiative being cultivated in the Chicago Public Schools and Central Illinois school districts to give pre-service and in-service teachers the credentials to teach computer science in schools.
Through her work as the Fulbright-FACEPE Distinguished Chair in STEM at UPE, Gokhale will teach courses, investigate student attitudes toward STEM+C, and conduct faculty seminars geared toward guiding online learning communities for the Millennial generation.
Gokhale was a Fulbright Scholar to India in 2002. The Fulbright Program is the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government that aims to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the peoples of other countries.
