Professor Andrew Weeks, of the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures, has been invited to give a talk March 22 at the Academy of Sciences in Mainz, Germany, to celebrate completion of the Weigel Edition.
Weeks is a scholar of early modern German authors once regarded as esoteric mystics but now understood, in part due to his research, as speculative thinkers and religious dissenters. Since 1991 he has published eight books—three volumes of critical editions with scholarly translations totaling 2,000 pages, four monographs, and a co-edited volume—as well as numerous journal articles.
Because of his work on early German literature, he was invited in 2010 to give the opening keynote lecture at Keble College, University of Oxford, at a conference organized by British historians to address German influence in 17th-century England, and lectures at the Leibniz Academy in Hannover, Germany, and at the Medical Historical Museum and Institute in Zurich, Switzerland, among other venues in Europe. Weeks teaches European studies and German language and literature and has been at Illinois State since 1992.
“The Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures is extremely proud of Andy Weeks,” said Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures Chair Bruce Burningham. “He is an extraordinary scholar and teacher with few equals. He enjoys the respect of colleagues within our department, across the University, and—as this invitation to address the Academy of Sciences in Mainz clearly demonstrates—around the world.”
