All Illinois State teacher education alumni who are completing their first or second year in the field are encouraged to register for the third annual New Teacher Conference (#NTConISU) on Friday, June 17.
The $20 registration provides Redbirds with a valuable classroom supply package, lunch with faculty, and up to six professional development hours. The event is part of the College of Education’s ongoing efforts to support alumni as they begin their careers in education.
About the conference
NTConISU session topics were selected based on input from beginning teachers:
- Managing classrooms
- Engaging students in learning
- Navigating the teacher evaluation process
- Providing effective feedback
- Communicating effectively with families, co-teachers, and paraprofessionals
- Infusing Common Core standards in curriculum
Sessions will be led by practicing educators from school districts across Illinois as well as expert faculty from the University. During lunch, attendees will connect with instructors from the Illinois State teacher education program.
Each attendee will receive a classroom supply package that includes materials that educators often have to reach into their own pockets to purchase each year.
Keynote
Greg Michie
This year’s keynote is Greg Michie, a seventh and eighth grade teacher in Chicago Public Schools, researcher, author and former Illinois State University teacher educator.
Michie is a prolific researcher and author in the field of education. His latest book is We Don’t Need Another Hero: Struggle, Hope, and Possibility in the Age of High-Stakes Schooling. His other works include Holler If You Hear Me: The Education of a Teacher and His Students, now in its second edition, and See You When We Get There: Teaching for Change in Urban Schools.
Special workshop
Ryan Goble specializes in creating joyful and sustainable learning experiences that “pop” for learners of all ages in formal and informal settings. Goble is the founder of Mindblue.com, an educational consulting company that specializes in interdisciplinary teaching and learning that embraces popular cultures and media.
