John Baur has been named associate vice president for Research and Graduate Studies at Illinois State University, effective immediately. Baur has served as interim associate vice president since 2013.

“Dr. Baur has a deep appreciation for the importance of research and graduate-level teaching, and he has a proven track record of securing highly competitive research grants,” said Illinois State Provost Janet Krejci. “His leadership skills and academic experience make him an ideal person to lead our Research and Graduate Studies area.”
Baur is a professor and former chair of Illinois State’s Department of Chemistry. His research, which has been supported by grants from the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, and the Research Corporation, involves the development and application of microscopic chemical sensors.
Baur earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Iowa State University and a Ph.D. in analytical chemistry from Indiana University. He began his career at Illinois State in 1993 as an assistant professor in the Department of Chemistry. He served as department chair from 2009 to 2013.
