“With a general focus on film theory, technique, and critical interpretation, this course will examine the history of Latin American cinema from its inception to the present.”
Topics include the following:
- Relationship between cinema and theater
- Development of film as a distinct art form
- Representation of national history in cinematic texts
- Link between cinema and politics
- “Golden age” of Latin American cinema during the 1940s
- Relationship between Latin American cinema and Hollywood
- Relationship between film theory and other forms of contemporary critical theory.
Films will include Maria Candelaria, Doña Barbara, Vampires in Havana, Strawberry and Chocolate, El Norte, City of God, Black Orpheus, Amores Perros, and Motorcycle Diaries.
