During our last department survey, we were surprised to hear a few reasons why people haven’t climbed at the Study Fitness Center… yet. Allow us to dispel some of the most common misconceptions about climbing so you can enjoy this fun activity!
NOT SURE WHEN THE HOURS ARE
You can always find climbing hours on our website. Open during the most popular rec hours: 4-9 p.m. Mondays–Thursdays, 3-5 p.m. on Fridays, and 4-7 p.m. Sundays.
Students can also reserve time at the wall for their group for a small fee (minimum of six climbers to reserve).
IT COSTS TO CLIMB
It’s free to climb the wall (during normal hours). The only cost is signing up for a belay workshop to learn more and belay independently at the wall; only $10 per workshop.
FEAR OF HEIGHTS
Try our Bouldering Cave. Bouldering is a form of climbing that can be done below 15 feet high without need for ropes or harnesses.
FEAR OF DOING IT ALONE/TAKES TOO LONG
Our climbing wall supervisors are trained to work with you through the entire experience:
• Providing an orientation
• Helping you harness up and tying in
• Belaying and providing encouragement during the climb
FEAR OF EVERYONE WATCHING
The reality of you being on the wall is that you look like you’re doing it right. What people watching you climb are really thinking is:
“Wow, I’m too scared to try that” and “They’re so brave. I wish I was brave enough to try the wall.”
