The Illinois State University Planetarium will offer the full-dome video program Light Years from Andromeda, at 7:30 p.m. Friday, October 14, and at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, October 15. This is a single-weekend event and will not be offered again.
Light Years from Andromeda follows a beam of light leaving the Andromeda Galaxy and traveling across the void of intergalactic space. On a planet located in a nearby galaxy, intelligent life evolves. Over the course of many millennia, as the light speeds across the light years, the creatures on the planet form cultures and civilizations—and begin to wonder about the universe that surrounds them.
The show is narrated by Michael Dorn, who played Lieutenant Worf from Star Trek: The Next Generation. The program tells the story of cosmic distances, along with humanity’s quest to understand the universe. Along the way it explores concepts of light-travel time and light-years.
After Light Years from Andromeda, Planetarium staff will give a tour of the current evening sky, under the Planetarium dome, exploring the bright stars, constellations, and planets visible from Central Illinois.
Admission to the Illinois State University Planetarium is $4 for adults, $3 for children ages 5-12 and seniors, and $2 for children ages 3-4. For more information, call the Planetarium’s Skyline at (309) 438-5007 or visit Planetarium website.
