The Center for Teaching, Learning, and Technology’s fall seminar series, Foundations of Diversity and Inclusion, begins this week! It’s designed to be a safe way for all faculty members and staff to discuss important, but sometimes uncomfortable, topics. Plus, enhance your skills in media creation and collaboration with this week’s Technology Short Courses, including OneDrive and Office 365, Camtasia, and Photoshop. OneDrive and Office 365 for Mobile
Monday, October 10 • 9 a.m. to noon
Take your projects on the go using Microsoft Office apps for iOS, Android, and Windows mobile devices. Premium features found in these apps are now available to Illinois State faculty and staff for free as part of the Office 365 software suite. This workshop will get you started working with the mobile versions of Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and OneNote. You will also explore OneDrive, Microsoft’s cloud-based storage, also free for members of the campus community. Learn how to share documents through OneDrive and discuss how to use this service within the boundaries of Illinois State data security policies and FERPA. Bring your smartphone or tablet with you to get the most out of this workshop. Registration is required.
Photoshop: 3 Ways to Change a Photo

When it comes down to it, there are only 3 ways to change a photo in Photoshop: general changes that affect the whole photo, changes via selection, and changes made using a brush-metaphor tool. We’ll be exploring all three. As far as brushes go, we’ll be spending a good amount of time learning how to use the Clone Stamp and Healing Brush tools. Registration is required.

CTLT’s Early-Career Faculty Circles offer faculty in their 1st, 2nd, or 3rd year of service at ISU a combination of professional development and peer support. Join us for a series of lively conversations about surviving and thriving in the academy. Topics are based on chapters from Teaching What You Don’t Know by Therese Huston. Participants will receive a copy of the book and an executive summary of each chapter. Come to either the Wednesday or Thursday session. No registration necessary.

Do you want to add your voice to a PowerPoint presentation and make it available to your students online? Learn to use Camtasia, a screen-recording program that lets you narrate PowerPoint presentations, still images, or videos. You will also learn how to upload the final product so students can access it. Registration is required.

Bias, Prejudice, and Discrimination

Discrimination comes in many forms and persists on many levels in our society. This is despite efforts to promote inclusion and enact civil rights legislation. Discrimination, whether subtle or overt, continues to impact race relations in our country and the experience of Students of Color in our classrooms. This seminar will help you better define concepts like bias, prejudice, and discrimination. You’ll explore the nature of implicit bias and stereotype threat, and discover tools to minimize bias in the classroom and in the workplace. Participants are welcome to bring a lunch to this discussion. Registration is required.
