Introduction to ReggieNet – Part 1

Get a walkthrough of the ReggieNet interface and the basics of organizing your particular courses. Learn how to organize and display student grades in Gradebook 2. Communicate with students through Announcements, Messages, and Email. Add content to your course site using Syllabus and the Resources tool. Note: We strongly encourage you to also attend Introduction to ReggieNet – Part 2, which covers other important tools. Registration is required.
Motivate All Students: Do They Believe They Can Succeed?
Tuesday, January 31 • 2–3:30 p.m.
Your students’ belief in their ability to succeed determines how they approach learning in your course. This session explores the factors that influence whether students dive into difficult topics or tasks, or if they give up too easily. Examine how to overcome “learned helplessness.”
About the series: Motivation is a key factor in helping students to learn. Very little, if any, learning take place if students don’t have a reason to engage with course material. A further challenge: There’s not one method of motivation that works with all students, all the time. This seminar series will look at a variety of motivational theories and explore how they can be used to inspire our diverse community of learners. Attend as many sessions as you can. Photoshop: Introduction
Wednesday, February 1 • 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Get an overview of the digital image editing program, including a walkthrough of basic tools and concepts. Learn to navigate around raster graphics, using the tools and commands available in Photoshop, as well as the various ways you can save your work for a website or for printing. This class finishes with a lesson on how to professionally color correct an image. Registration is required.

Wednesday, February 1 • 1–3 p.m.
Explore the fundamentals of this web-based alternative to PowerPoint. Prezi allows users to create stunning, animated presentations. Learn how to use Prezi’s powerful tools to lead your audience visually, step-by-step, through a narrative. This workshop is designed for both instructors who wish to use Prezi in the classroom and staff members who want to use Prezi for meetings and business presentations. Registration is required.

Thursday, February 2 • 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Get an overview on this presentation software’s basic tools and functions. You will learn to work with text, images, slide layouts, backgrounds, slide transitions and more. This class is suitable for those who are entirely new to PowerPoint or for those who would like a refresher. Registration is required.
Future Professors Development Circle
Friday, February 3 • 9:30–10:30 a.m.
This professional development circle helps graduate students prepare for a career teaching in the academy. Explore pedagogical issues, effective and disruptive teaching strategies, and gain confidence in your ability to teach at the college level. Share teaching tips, tricks, and get support from other future professors. All participants will receive a copy of How Learning Works: 7 Research-Based Principles for Smart Teaching, by Susan A. Ambrose et al., but no between-session reading is required. This group is open to all graduate students currently teaching or planning to teach in the future. No registration required. Attend as many as you can, but don’t worry if you can’t attend all of them!
Be an Active Ally for LGBTQ+ Students
Friday, February 3 • 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Join members of The League of Extraordinary Genders, Illinois State’s first student group for transgender and gender non-conforming students, for an informative experience designed specifically for faculty and staff. Get an overview of basic terminology, perspectives on gender identity, and guidelines for being an ally. You’ll also leave able to better identity strategies to address negative behaviors directed toward LGBTQ+. Participants are welcome to bring a lunch to this event; cookies will be provided.
