Illinois State University Police, along with Bloomington Police, Normal Police, McLean County Sheriff’s Department, and the McLean County State’s Attorney, will hold the annual Behind the Badge community event from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, April 11, at Horton Field House, 180 N. Adelaide St., Normal. The event is free and open to the public.

Officers and members of the State’s Attorney’s office will be available to discuss police procedures and approaches with Bloomington-Normal residents. “It’s an opportunity for the community to experience what law enforcement officers do on a day-to-day basis,” said ISU Chief of Police Aaron Woodruff, who noted the event is part of ongoing community-building efforts. “We want to continue to build positive contacts between law enforcement and community members.”
In its third year, Behind the Badge (formerly called the Law Enforcement Summit) offers a casual environment that will include activities for children. Residents have the opportunity to ask questions about topics such as traffic stops, potential use of force, and body cameras. “It’s about creating a dialogue that leads to mutual understanding,” said Woodruff, whose officers take part in continual training on fair and impartial policing.
