In 2012, the American Speech Language Hearing Association (ASHA) created an Ad Hoc Committee on Clinical Supervision (AHCS). In addition to establishing essential knowledge and skills needed for effective supervision, AHCS recommended that everyone who provides clinical supervision should be required to engage in supervisory training.
AHCS developed the Plan for Developing Resources and Training Opportunities in Clinical Supervision in 2016. A specific recommendation of this committee is a phased-in plan to require a minimum of 2-clock hours of professional development in supervision training every three years. This would become the minimum requirement for professionals to participate in a supervisory role in clinical education.
ISU’s CSD Department is a member of the Council of Academic Programs in Communication Sciences and Disorders (CAPCSD). As a member of CAPCSD, we are able to provide our faculty, alumni, and clinical educators/preceptors access to online course modules focused on clinical education. There are two free courses (Foundations of Clinical Education and The Student-Clinical Educator Relationships) available for either ASHA or AAA CEUs. Please email csd@ilstu.edu for information on access and enrollment codes to these free CEUs on clinical education.
Our department is excited to offer this resource to our alumni and clinical educators/preceptors. We look forward to working together to increase engagement in clinical education.
