The Illinois State University chapter of the National Student Speech-Language-Hearing Association (NSSLHA) recently received a check for $250. These funds were given as an award from the Simucase, a web-based learning platform for speech-language pathology students.
During summer 2017, university groups competed for the opportunity to receive a donation from Simucase by completing a specific simulated case-study educational experience. Multiple graduate students in the Department of Communication Disorders and Sciences (CSD) participated in the experience and the NSSLHA group was selected by Simucase to receive the competition award money.
Tricia Larkin, CSD clinical educator, facilitated the opportunity for the graduate students. She described the simulated learning as an opportunity to engage in thoughtful analysis of clinical information related to a complex assessment. “The advantages of the simulated learning and the opportunity to receive award money were motivating for many involved in this activity.”
Melissa Jenkins, NSSLHA Materials Center coordinator, received the funds on behalf of NSSLHA. Jenkins indicates that funds will be used to purchase additional materials for the CSD Materials Center. Graduate students use materials housed in the center during direct clinical education. Current and future graduate students will benefit from the materials acquired as a result of this award.
