The Town of Normal recently established a railroad Quiet Zone. The new zone means that train crews will not regularly sound a horn as a warning of a train’s approach to rail crossings.
Normal qualified for the Quiet Zone designation because of safety equipment installed at crossings as part of high-speed rail improvements. Train crews may still sound horns in the Quiet Zone in order to prevent imminent injury, death, or property damage. Amtrak trains will sound horns to alert passengers of departure from Uptown Station.
