Febrian (Annie) Moten, a second-year graduate student in the clinical-counseling psychology program, is a recipient of the 2018 Donald F. McHenry Fellowship and the Ada Belle Clark Welsh Scholarship.
Moten graduated from Pomona College in Claremont, CA in 2017 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a minor in French.
“I became interested in psychology and pursuing a career in mental health after my own experiences with mental health issues within my community,” Moten said. “I would like to give back to my community by serving those needs.”
Immediately upon graduation, Moten intends to pursue a doctoral degree in either clinical or counseling psychology before working in community mental health and eventually in private practice.
Donald F. McHenry ’57, a United States Ambassador to the United Nations, participated in many student activities during his time at Illinois State. He was a member of the student chapter of the NAACP and the student radio station and participated in theater productions. In 1956 he captained the debate team and was named Outstanding Debater at Illinois State and in the United States. McHenry attributed much of his success as a diplomat to these and other experiences at Illinois State that helped him strengthened his communication skills and deepened his understanding of the great issues that helped him so ably serve in his role as ambassador.
Ada Bell Clark Welsh earned a two-year diploma from Illinois State in 1902. She had a distinguished teaching career in several states including Illinois, Arizona and California. Mrs. Welsh died in 1975. She provided in her will to establish a scholarship to assist women who have prior involvement in community or civic activities and who plan to have a career in liberal arts, humanities, teaching, or improvement of teaching. Criteria include a record of academic excellence, evidence of career goals in one of the designated areas, and financial need.
In addition to these two scholarships, Moten was also the recipient of the Bloomington Normal Soroptimist International’s Virginia Wagner Award.
