T.Y. Wang, POL, presented an invited workshop at the Institute of Political Methodology in Taiwan. Hosted by Academia Sinica, Taiwan’s top research institution, the workshop was co-sponsored by Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research at the University of Michigan and the Society for Political Methodology, the Political Methodology Section of the American Political Science Association.

Ali Riaz, POL, presented “Making Walls, Fencing Borders and Living on the Margin” at the International Political Science Association Conference at Brisbane, Australia. The presentation was part of the panel “Beyond Borders: Intrastate and Interstate Socio-Political Movements in South Asia.” Riaz also delivered a lecture at the University of Sydney.

Department of Chemistry faculty and students presented at the 255th American Chemical Society National Meeting in New Orleans. Presentations included:
Shawn Hitchcock and Eric Jacobsen presented “Development of synthetic method for the preparation of sulfinate esters and sulfinamides that minimizes the formation S-(p-tolyl) p-tolylthiosulfonate.” Hitchcock and Stephanie Waggoner presented “Carbodiimide approach to the synthesis of chiral alpha-amino ester sulfinamides.”
Timothy Lash and Alyssa Carroll presented “Synthesis of a divinylic carbaporphyrin for investigations into Diels-Alder cycloaddition reactions.” Lash also presented “Synthesis of tropone-fused porphyrins” with Emma Cramer; “Rearrangement of N-methyl palladium(II) and rhodium(III) carbaporphyrins” with Alissa Latham; “Strategies for the synthesis of azuliporphyrin dimers” with Mollie Metallo; “Synthesis of azuliporphyrins from 2-methylazulene” with Julian Saul Moriones;  Investigations directed towards the synthesis of carbachlorins” with Mario Noboa; and “Development of strategies for the synthesis of benziporphyrin dimers” with Rachel Tomlovich.
Craig McLauchlan and Xiao Wu presented “Synthesis and characterization of a series of vanadium(IV) complexes with the Kläui ligand.”
Taylor Arledge and Jean Standard, CHE, with “Quantum Mechanical Studies of Singlet and Triplet Chlorine-, Bromine-, and Iodine-containing Fluorocarbenes.” Matthew Drummer and Robert Quandt also joined Standard for “Alkyne Combustion: Experimental and Computational Studies of Formyl Radical Formation.”

Publications
Ali Riaz, POL, published an essay in Asian Affairs titled “More Than Meets the Eye: The Narratives of Secularism and Islam in Bangladesh.” The journal is published by the Royal Society of Asian Affairs of England. The paper is a part of the special issue “Ghosts from the Past? Assessing Recent Developments in Religious Freedom in South Asia.” He also published a commentary on the heightened number of extrajudicial killings by the law enforcement agencies in the past months in Bangladesh in The Daily Star.
