Praxis results are in.
The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) recently received summaries of graduate student performance on the Praxis assessment. This assessment is a comprehensive measure, commissioned by the American Speech Language Hearing Association (ASHA). Students answer test items that require synthesis of multiple professional skills.
Both audiology and speech-language pathology students take the Praxis exam when clinical practicums and academic course work are complete. A passing score on the Praxis is needed to meet one requirement for licensures and certification of clinical competency (CCCs).
Five Illinois State University audiology doctoral students undertook the Praxis examination between September 2017 and August 2018. These students had a greater average of “percentage correct” when compared to the state and national averages in three of five categories assessed by the Praxis Test for Audiology.
Twenty-nine Illinois State University speech-language pathology graduate students undertook the Praxis examination between September, 2017 and August 2018. These students had a greater average of “percentage correct” when compared to the state and national average in all three categories assessed by the Praxis Test for Speech Pathology. Additionally, more than half of the speech pathology graduate students received scores that fell within the upper two quartiles of scores for all categories.
CSD will use the reported Praxis data as formative assessment for ongoing programming analysis. The current scores are a positive reflection of quality academic and clinical experiences provided by the CSD faculty and staff at Illinois State University.
