Which companies are hiring? Do I meet their requirements? Will this be a good fit for me? These are a few of the questions students often ask as they consider full-time employment, internships, or assistantships. However, these questions often multiply for those from other countries studying in the United States.
The Career Center’s Cultural Career Network seeks to address some of those concerns by hosting the International Student Career Series this fall. The three-part program specifically provides Illinois State’s international students with career support to help them remain competitive and increase their confidence in the job market.
The International Student Career Series includes:
- CPT and Career Center Resources, August 31, 1–2 p.m.
Held at 110P Student Services Building, students learn about Curricular Practical Training (CPT) and the Career Center resources available to help effectively navigate the job search and interview process when seeking full-time employment, internships, and assistantships in the United States. - Employer Panel, September 28, 1–2 p.m.
Interacting with employers can be particularly challenging when cultural norms differ. This crash course will educate students on what employers seek in the candidates they hire. - International Students and Alumni Panel, October 26, 1–2 p.m.
One of the best ways to gain confidence regarding the job search is to see the success of international students who came before you. This panel will pass on first-hand knowledge regarding proven strategies to land a job. Alumni will also share their experiences in order to help international students on their own paths.
“In today’s competitive job market, finding a job can be overwhelming for many graduating students. This can be even more difficult for international students who are interested in employment in the United States,” Career Center Senior Assistant Director Maureen Roach said. “The International Student Career Series is an example of Illinois State’s commitment to diversity, and the Career Center’s mission of assisting all Illinois State students with developing, evaluating, and implementing career decisions.”

The Career Center’s Cultural Career Network (CCN) prepares students for the workplace in areas of networking and career awareness. CCN encourages students of diverse backgrounds to participate in a variety of events designed to connect them with employers and to provide resources about available internship and career opportunities.
