On October 1, Redbirds have the unique opportunity to make their voices heard within their community during the Town of Normal Meet & Greet. The event, sponsored by the Town of Normal, Student Government Association, and the Center for Community Engagement and Service Learning, allows students to meet with Town of Normal Council members, staff, and leadership to discuss issues important to students in the community.
The Meet & Greet takes place on the second floor of Medici’s in Uptown Normal, from 5 to 6:45 p.m. Monday, October 1. Mayor Chris Koos will make brief remarks at 5:15 p.m. Food will be provided, and students do not need to register in advance.
Billy Stripeik, a member of the Student Government Association, attended last year’s event. “I got a unique opportunity to meet with elected officials and talk about issues important to me.” Stripeik encourages students to attend the event on October 1, too. “It’s a great opportunity to meet your locally elected officials and eat free food!”
Town of Normal City Council members also look forward to discussing community issues with students during the Meet & Greet, and student input is definitely valued by community leaders. In the past, student concerns about recycling opportunities even helped to direct changes in local legislation.
Following last year’s Meet & Greet, Council Member Kathleen Lorenz said, “Many of the students affirmed for me that the town’s planning efforts to plan for the next generation’s lifestyle, work, and recreation needs are consistent with the needs of this group of young, upcoming professionals. Many mentioned that our Uptown district and other lifestyle amenities (such as the Constitution Trail, bike lanes, etc.) are on target for what these young professional are looking for in a community.”
Council Member Chemberly Cummings also attended last year’s Meet & Greet: “I was elated to see so many students! Even if it was to obtain credit for a class and grab a bite to eat, I was able to maximize on the opportunity to get to know some of our residents. I got to meet some future Council members!”
