The ISU Percussion Ensemble will present its fall concert at 7 p.m. Sunday, November 11, in the University’s Kemp Recital Hall. The concert is free and open to the public. Under the direction of David Collier and Ben Stiers, the ISU Percussion Ensemble will explore the intimacy and communication of chamber music through a variety of trios and quartets.
The interweaving of rhythmic melodic lines inspired by 70s and 80s jazz are found in the marimba quartet Sculpture in Wood by German composer Rüdiger Pawassar. Similar, but uniquely different, is Selva Luminosa by Francisco Perez. Perez combines the influences of merengue, salsa, Steve Reich, and Michel Camilo into a quartet for two vibraphones and two marimbas. Venturing into a sonically different world is A Man with a Gun Lives Here by Steven Snowden. Based upon the fascinating system of symbols known as the Hobo Code, each movement resourcefully uses very limited materials.
The concert program will open with IV by Johanna Beyer. Compositions by women are infrequently performed and IV–composed in 1936—is one of the earliest works for percussion ensemble. The concert will also feature DIN by Andy Harnsberger and Shock Factor 3 by Nathan Daughtrey.
