Nerida Ellerton and McKenzie Clements, both professors in the Department of Mathematics, will give a presentation titled “Cradles for a Nation: Comparing One-room Schools that Abraham Lincoln Attended (1816-1826) with One-room Schools of the period 1840-1950,” at the University Club at 4:30 p.m. Friday, February 1, in the Founders Suite of the Bone Student Center.
The talk will give an overview of both the one-room schools that Abraham Lincoln would have attended in the years 1816-1826 and one-room schools established in the years 1840-1950. Ellerton and Clements will highlight the important changes made between these two eras, specifically touching on the curriculum and teaching methods administered at each, and what made the later one-room schools the iconic image of what such schools in North America look like.
All faculty, staff, annuitants and guests are welcome to join us at the University Club from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. this Friday in the Founders suite in the Bone Student Center.
