The Sociology and Anthropology Research Series at Illinois State University will present a talk from visiting scholar Lucio Menezes Ferreira titled “‘We Eat Beef Jerky, Too’: African Diaspora Archaeology at the Beef Jerky Plantations from 11:45 a.m.-12:45 p.m. Friday, February 8, in Schroeder Hall, room 212.
Ferreira, a scholar from the Department of Anthropology at the Federal University of Pelotas in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, will examine the 19th century cultural practices, cosmologies, and spiritual practices of the African diaspora at beef jerky plantations in Rio Grande do Sul with the aim of understanding anti-racist narratives and the links between past and present in a society marked by ongoing structural racism.
