Over spring break, faculty members at Illinois State University can engage in an intense, experiential professional development process, thanks to a new workshop offered by the Center for Teaching, Learning, and Technology. CTLT is the first teaching-support unit in the Midwest to offer the internationally recognized Instructional Skills Workshop (ISW).
During this three-day workshop, participants will explore concepts such as participatory learning, diversity of learning, adult learning, and the building of community. Faculty will determine how these concepts can be implemented in their own classrooms. They will also present three, 10-minute teaching demonstrations and receive feedback from their peers. It’s all designed to promote self-discovery, engender a sense of teamwork, and enhance one’s identity as a teacher.
A small group of Illinois State faculty members piloted the program with CTLT’s Dana Karraker and visiting professionals from the University of Windsor, Ontario, last summer. The spring workshop will be the first open to all full-time faculty members.
Schedule
ISW will run as part of CTLT’s Spring Institute. The cohort for this workshop will meet March 12–14 from 9 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Lunch will be provided each day.
Because of the intensive experiential learning approach of ISW, participants need to commit to the entire 3-day workshop. In addition, there will be work outside of workshop hours. Full-time tenure or non-tenure track participants who complete all three days are eligible for a $300 stipend.
Apply before Friday, March 1
Apply to join ISW by answering a few simple questions, which will allow the organizers to best match you with other participants and adjust the workshop to meet your needs. The deadline to apply is Friday, March 1.
Please note: To facilitate the best learning experience, the number of possible participants being accepted for spring is limited.
