Do you know of anyone who is interested in attending a theatre camp this summer? Look no further than the Illinois Shakespeare Festival’s (ISF) Summer Camps for Youth.
Students who are engaged in the arts can expect to learn communication skills, problem-solving techniques, and creative expression, while also being given the opportunity to have fun and work collaboratively with others.
The Illinois Shakespeare Festival offers three camps based upon grade level: Groundlings (Elementary Camp), Apprentices (Middle School Camp), and Shakespeare’s Players (High School Camp).
In the Groundlings Camp, first- to fourth-grade students can expect a weeklong camp experience that is filled with theater movement, exploration, Shakespeare and his language, and a culminating performance for friends and family. The one-week camp runs 9 a.m. to noon July 22 through July 26 at the School of Theatre and Dance on the campus of Illinois State University. The cost is $150 per student.
In the Apprentices Camp, fifth- to eighth-grade students will gain more focused experience in a variety of theater skills including character work, stage combat, movement, and voice. Students will also collaborate as a company to produce a Shakespeare-inspired play that will be performed on the Center for the Performing Arts theater stage on July 26. The three-week camp runs 1–5 p.m. Monday–Friday from July 8 through July 26 at the School of Theatre and Dance on the campus of Illinois State University. The cost is $300 per student.
In Shakespeare’s Players Camp, high school students (ninth to 12th grade) will hone and work on their theater skills, including Shakespeare’s text, physical character work, stage combat, movement, and voice. Students will also collaborate as a company to produce a one-act version of As You Like It adapted for ISF camps that will be performed on the Center for the Performing Arts Theatre stage on July 26. This three-week camp runs 1-5 p.m. Monday–Friday from July 8 through July 26 at the School of Theatre and Dance on the campus of Illinois State University. The cost is $300 per student.
