Illinois State University Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost Jan Murphy named Dan Elkins the associate vice president of academic fiscal management in the Office of the Provost, effective July 1. Elkins will take over for Alan Lacy, who will retire June 30, after 20 years at Illinois State.
Elkins currently serves as the director of the School of Kinesiology and Recreation (KNR) at Illinois State, where he oversees four undergraduate majors and eight graduate sequences. Elkins was named director of KNR in 2017 after serving as interim director and graduate program director for the school. His University service includes work with the Five-Year Enrollment Management Committee, the Transfer Student Council, the First-Year Experience Committee, the University Assessment Advisory Council, and the Academic Senate.
“Dr. Elkins’ dedication and breadth of experience will contribute greatly to the areas of fiscal management and facilities planning for the University,” said Provost Murphy. “He will be an excellent addition to the senior leadership team in the Division of Academic Affairs.”
Joining the faculty of Illinois State in 2005, Elkins taught undergraduate and graduate courses in recreation and park administration. He was awarded the Outstanding Teacher Award for the College of Applied Science and Technology in 2013. His scholarly work has appeared in such journals as College Student Affairs Journal, the Journal of Student Affairs Research and Practice, the International of Sports Management, and the Recreational Sports Journal.
Prior to arriving at Illinois State, Elkins was on faculty at Indiana University, where he earned his doctorate in leisure behavior with a minor in educational inquiry methodology. He also served as a facilities supervisor in the park districts of Deerfield and Highland Park in Illinois.
