Three celebrated poets will offer readings for the annual SRPR Lucia Getsi Reading Series on Thursday, April 11. Named for the Spoon River Poetry Review’s (SRPR) long-time editor and benefactor, Lucia Getsi, this year’s event will be at 7 p.m. at Ewing Manor.
The event is free and open to the public. A reception will follow the reading.
Featured poets will be Mark Svenvold, Kristin Prevallet, and Jerome Rothenberg.
Rothenberg is an internationally celebrated poet, translator, anthologist, and performer with more than 90 books of poetry and 12 assemblages of traditional and avant-garde poetry, such as Technicians of the Sacred and Poems for the Millennium. A new book of poems, The President of Desolation, was published this year by Black Widow Press in Boston, and he is currently assembling a large transnational anthology of North and South American poetry “from origins to present.”
Svenvold’s work has appeared in The New York Times Magazine, TheNewYorker.com, Fortune/Small Business, and Orion Magazine. His award-winning poetry books include Soul Data, which won the Vassar Millar Award, and Empire Burlesque, which won The Journal Award. He is the author of two books of nonfiction, Big Weather: Chasing Tornadoes in the Heart of America and Elmer McCurdy: The Misadventures in Life and Afterlife of an American Outlaw, (Basic Books), which unravels the bizarre career of a Long Beach, California, fun house mummy.
Prevallet is a mindbody coach, poet, and educator. The author of five books of poetry, including the fragmented memoir I, Afterlife: Essay in Mourning Time and Trance Poetics: Your Writing Mind. She has received residencies and awards from NYFA, the PEN Translation Award, Spalding University, Poet’s House, the Centre Internationale de Poesie, and the Ocean State Writer’s Conference, to name a few.
The series is co-sponsored by Illinois State University’s Creative Writing Program, Department of English, the Harold K. Sage Foundation Fund, the Illinois State University Foundation, and the Publications Unit.
