Two events in honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month will feature Illinois State University’s Shelly Clevenger, Chris Dove, and students at the Normal Public Library.
Stalking, October 9
Clevenger, an associate professor of criminal justice, will lead a session titled “Stalking: Understanding the crime and its impact” at 7 p.m. Wednesday, October 9, in the Normal Public Library Community Room. Clevenger, her students, and the YWCA Stepping Stones Director of Community Outreach Cinnamon Porter, will present facts about the crime, some resources in the local community and ways to help a loved one who may be experiencing cyber- or in-person stalking.
Abuse by the Books, October 17
Abuse in the pages of literature will be explored with “Abuse by the Books: Understanding domestic violence and how to help survivors” at 4 p.m. Thursday, October 17, at the Normal Public Library Community Room.
Dove, who works with Illinois State’s Health Promotion and Wellness will help lead a journey through some of the most profound and revealing passages of groundbreaking books in the field of dating/domestic violence and trauma. Members of SERC will read the passages. Following the presentation, participants are invited to flip through, re-read, and discuss the content Clevenger and her students will provide.
