Illinois State’s chapter of Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) is the foremost organization for students interested in public relations and communication. It is an award-winning and nationally recognized registered student organization. With approximately 40 dues-paying members, Illinois State’s chapter is both one of the most active organizations nationally, as well as one of the largest PRSSA chapters countrywide.
The current president of PRSSA, Megan Pellock, stated “our major goal is to help students grow professionally through opportunities such as workshops, speakers, agency tours, as well as national and regional conferences.”
Illinois State’s PRSSA chapter recently went on an agency tour at Golin, a public relations firm in Chicago. Pellock reflected back on this experience saying, “the alumni we connected with there were great! They were so helpful and receptive to the group.”
Students also gain relevant experience by working on one of three committees: PRogressive Image (PRi), Relations Committee, and Development Committee. PRi is an entirely student-run firm serving three real-world clients including: Maliyah Minks Lashes and Brows, a local beauty bar; Worn Again Too, a nonprofit boutique; and the School Street Food Pantry. The Relations Committee produces all chapter publications, including a blog and the PRemier Newsletter for current members. The Development Committee is responsible for fundraising for the chapter as well as planning all social events.
Pellock encouraged alumni to contact the chapter if they are interested in becoming involved saying, “we are always looking for guest speakers for our weekly meetings, as well as professional development workshops. We love getting to connect with alumni of Illinois State and hear about their experiences!”
