Scholar and author José Antonio Bowen will keynote the 2020 University-Wide Teaching & Learning Symposium. Registration is now open for the January 8 event, which includes a morning workshop with Bowen, a conversation about his book, and his luncheon address.
In a career spanning more than 35 years, Bowen has been an innovator and a leader in areas as diverse as music (his academic discipline), classroom design, teaching with technology, and higher education administration. His work has been featured in media outlets ranging from the New York Times to the Chronicle of Higher Education to National Public Radio. He most recently served as president of Goucher College in Baltimore, Maryland.
Perhaps his most widely acclaimed work is Teaching Naked: How Moving Technology Out of Your College Classroom Will Improve Student Learning. Published in 2012, it tackled head-on the growing challenges to teaching and student learning presented by new mobile technologies and social media. With the rapid pace of technological change in the intervening years, Bowen has continued to refine and present his perspectives on the national stage.
“When a group of us from Illinois State saw Dr. Bowen speak at a national conference,” says Claire Lamonica, director for the Center for Teaching, Learning, and Technology, “we knew instantly he would be a natural fit for the annual Teaching & Leaning Symposium. He’s a dynamic speaker with fascinating ideas about how students interact with technology and the world around them.”
About the Symposium
Bowen’s insights mesh with the 2020 Symposium theme, Intentional Technologies: Reclaiming Our Spaces, which encourages teachers to make conscious decisions about what to allow, and what to exclude, from the spaces in which our students learn. In addition to the keynote workshops and luncheon talk, members of the Illinois State University community will explore these ideas through nearly 60 presentations. These include individual presentations, panel discussions, roundtables, and posters.
Lunch, which is free for faculty, staff, and graduate students who register in advance, also includes the announcement of the 2019 Outstanding University Teaching Awards winners.
