Metcalf Laboratory School faculty, staff, and students honored veterans on Monday, November 11, with an all-school assembly. Teachers Ronda Wilder and Crystal Patterson collaborated to honor the living, deceased, and currently serving military members connected to Metcalf. Families and veterans were invited to join the school as they acknowledged that our country’s freedom comes with a price. The school kicked off the Veterans Day event with the Pledge of Allegiance and the National Anthem, performed by David Sulzberger’s middle school chorus. Veterans were honored and thanked for their service as the chorus sang the armed service songs from each branch.
Social Studies teacher Zack Gilbert introduced the school community to America’s White Table, a white table set up in mess halls as a symbol of the servicemembers lost in the line of duty—a table where no one will ever sit. Each item on the table has special significance and helped students understand the sacrifice associated with service to our country.
Grade levels shared special messages with the veterans and 8th-grade students personally thanked each veteran for their service. Veterans and their families enjoyed student-created decorations and the Metcalf Wall of Honor. The wall included over three hundred personalized bricks, identifying loved ones who served.
The Wall of Honor will remain up to acknowledge the service of our veterans.
