On July 26, 2019, Illinois State University Trustee Julie Annette Jones ‘90 was unanimously elected to serve as the chair of the Illinois State University Board of Trustees. In the 23-year history since the Board of Trustees of Illinois State University began operation, this marks the first time an African American woman holds the position of board chairperson.
Jones is honored and humbled by this historic opportunity. She wants to use this platform as chair to serve as an example of the possibilities available for underrepresented students and alumni even if they are not wealthy or politically connected. As she reminds everyone, “Your opinions and contributions matter at Illinois State University. Your continued service and dedication are recognized.”
“Serving as chair is not about me. It is yet another avenue of service and to be a role model for Redbirds. Since my time as a student and continuing now, the education and opportunities I received at Illinois State University has opened many doors to me as a black, female, first-generation college student from the south side of Chicago. It is a pleasure to serve in this role because I want to assist my alma mater to become better.”
