This program is designed as an independent study project that explores environmental crime and justice issues within Guatemala. The project also will provide Illinois State students the opportunity to interact with faculty and students from Rafael LandÃvar University (URL) who share interests in environmental justice and legal issues.
There are two key components of the program. First, Illinois State University students will take part in a seven-to-ten-day visit to Guatemala City in June 2020 where they will participate in programs hosted by URL as well as visit cultural and environmental sites. Second, the Illinois State students who travel to Guatemala will serve as hosts when URL students and faculty visit Illinois State during the fall 2020 semester.
All program expenses will be covered. This includes round-trip airfare, meals, accommodations, in-country transportation, admission fees to program visits, tuition for three hours of independent study, and international health insurance.
Four legal studies (LGS) majors and four criminal justice sciences students will be chosen to participate in this program. Interested LGS majors must complete an application that is due March 15, 2020. Applicants must submit a short essay and provide a faculty recommendation. Dr. Thomas McClure, associate professor and legal studies director, will lead this program for the LGS students.
