The Research Series from the Department of Sociology and Anthropology continues with a talk by Dr. Nobuko Adachi titled “Yellow Peril Redux: Reformation of Racial Assaults Toward Asians in Diaspora During the Pandemic” at noon, February 19, via Zoom.
Adachi, a professor of anthropology at Illinois State University, will examine increasing incidents of xenophobia and racial hatred demonstrated against people of Asian descent in the United States due to the COVID-19 pandemic. She will argue that careless scapegoating language from leaders stokes fear, bias, and blame, and reinforces a long tradition of stereotypes.
As the words “China” and “Communist” become the new replacements for the “Yellow Peril” warnings heard at the beginning of the 20th century, Adachi will address the verbal abuse of Asian Americans, and Asians living in the United States.
Those interested can join the Zoom meeting with the passcode redux.
