As we welcome faculty, staff, and students to the fall 2021 semester we hope that our work promoting open access and scholarly communication resources and opportunities has been helpful. For those who are new to our updates or want a general overview of open access to read or pass along to others, there is the recently published A Guide to Open Access by Dominic Walker of the British Library (doi.org/10.23636/g6fm-dx07).

This four-page publication is brief enough to be read quickly but provides a broad overview of what open access is (and how it differs from paywalled materials and publications), some initial suggestions on how to publish scholarly or creative research as open access, and how to locate online open access resources on a variety of topics. The guide is written for a British institution, but the discussion and definitions are general enough to apply to the United States as well. For readers wanting more details, links to several more resources that provide further information are provided.

Milner Library also offers a wide variety of resources for those interested in open access and will be providing speakers and programming for Open Access Week October 25-31, 2021. If you have questions in the meantime, would like to include your materials on our institutional repository (ISU ReD), or have questions about scholarly communications or open access topics please contact Milner Library’s Scholarly Communication Team at isured@illinoisstate.edu
