The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) is sponsoring a series of films during the 2022-2023 academic year. The CSD Student Advisory Board (SAB) obtained a Fell Trust grant to fund a monthly film related to various speech, language, or hearing needs. The Normal Theater and Milner Library have partnered with CSD to offer these showings free and open to the public.
The first film, The Silent Child, plays Monday, September 12, at 7:00 p.m. at the Normal Theater. In this film, a child who is Deaf has no form of communication until a social worker teaches her sign language.
The goal of the film festival is to make different communication concerns more visible while spreading information and knowledge about them to the public. Moving forward, two other movie dates are scheduled for the Fall semester:
• When I Stutter on September 28
• In Our Right Minds on November 1.
All movies start at 7:00 p.m. Each film will have a community partner that offers resources to those who attend. A CSD faculty member will also speak at each event to offer educational information related to the film topic. At the showing of The Silent Child, the Heart of Illinois Low Incidence Association (HILIA) will provide resources related to the services they offer for children with hearing loss, and CSD faculty member Dr. Becky Braun will speak.
