The Sociology and Anthropology department is hosting Cristian Casanova ’17 as special Homecoming guest speaker on October 13. Casanova, who earned his bachelor’s in sociology at Illinois State University, will share his talk, “We Need Sociologists in Corporate: Career Journey from Sociology to Public Health and Policy to Technology Consulting.”

Diversity and inclusion, sustainability, and innovation are topics that more and more companies are seeking to understand so they can improve their business outcomes and their brand/reputation within the market. Students trained in sociology and anthropology are in the perfect position to leverage their training in research methods, data analyses, and critical thinking in multiple ways, ranging from creating partnerships with communities to understanding the user experience of a newly designed application. Casanova will share his experiences and journey, which have led him to a fulfilling and impactful career in the corporate sector.

After graduating from Illinois State, Casanova completed his summer CDC fellowship at the University of Michigan School of Public Health. Following his fellowship, he completed a year of service to support at-risk students as an AmeriCorps member at City Year. Pursuing his public health goals, he went on to complete both a master’s in health informatics and a master’s in public policy at the University of Michigan. He currently works as a senior consulting strategy analyst at Accenture’s Applied Intelligence practice, helping organizations utilize artificial intelligence technology, data analytics, and automation to solve complex problems and deliver intelligent insights.
