Illinois State students and faculty, and members of the Bloomington-Normal community came together to learn and discuss questions on reproductive rights and justice on September 22, 2022.
The first event in the Reproductive Justice series began with a panel of faculty and community members who discussed both the history of abortion and legal history of the Roe v. Wade and Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health decisions. Community members discussed their personal experiences and the religious implications one must consider when dealing with these issues. Afterward, participants gathered in listening circles to share and reflect on their own experiences around reproductive rights. Professors Meghan Leonard and Julie Webber were joined by the YWCA McLean County in planning the event.
The next two events in the speaker series will be:
“Reproductive Justice Without Borders: Notes on Abortion Rights and the Nation,” a talk by Dr. Brittany Leach from Southern Illinois University on October 25, 2022, from 6–7 p.m. in the Bone Student Center Circus Room.
“Queering Reproductive Justice: The Point Where Reproductive Justice Meets LGBTQ+ Politics,” a talk by Dr. Kimala Price of San Diego State University on November 1, 2022, from 6–7 p.m. on Zoom.
