This year’s class of incoming freshmen and transfer students could shatter recent records—not only in terms of its size, but also in terms of diversity. This portends both exciting opportunities and potential challenges as instructors strive to create welcoming, productive learning environments. Organizers have chosen the theme of Belongingness for the 2023 University-Wide Teaching & Learning Symposium with this in mind.
Belongingness
The Center for Integrated Professional Development (formerly CTLT) invites faculty, staff, and graduate students to submit proposals for the event, which is scheduled for the Wednesday before the start of the spring semester. Individuals or groups are encouraged to propose a presentation, a panel discussion, or a poster. While all proposals related to scholarly (evidence-based) approaches to teaching and learning are welcome, we especially encourage proposals that address the symposium theme.
“Belongingness” can be conceptualized on the personal level and also on the institutional or structural level. As a theme, it invites us to explore how, through means both big and small, we can make all members of our campus community feel more included and valued.

Proposals must be completed online by 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, October 2, 2022.

About the symposium
The annual University-Wide Teaching & Learning Symposium is the largest conversation of its kind at Illinois State University. It is organized by the Center for Integrated Professional Development on the behalf of the Office of the Provost. This year’s event will be held on Wednesday, January 11, 2023 at the Bone Student Center, marking a return to a face-to-face conference for at least a part of the day.
