The College of Arts and Sciences will conduct a food drive to benefit the School Street Food Pantry, October 10–21. Collection boxes will be available in the College office and in all school/department offices.
“We should be doing everything we can to fight food insecurity in our University community,” said Dean Heather Dillaway. “If you are able to help, please bring an item to contribute to the collection box in your schools or departments.”
Items that the pantry always needs include:
FOOD ITEMS
- Boxed macaroni and cheese
- Breakfast cereal (smaller boxes)
- Canned chicken or tuna
- Canned fruit
- Canned tomatoes
- Canned sauce
- Cooking oil
- Flour
- Pasta sauce
- Pasta
- Powdered milk
- Rice mixes of any kind
- Spices
- Sugar
PERSONAL CARE ITEMS
- Body wash
- Shampoo
- Soap
- Toothpaste
- Toothbrushes
The School Street Food Pantry provides food and supplies to currently enrolled college and trade school students in the Bloomington-Normal area who are experiencing food insecurity. The pantry is located inside Normal First United Methodist Church at 211 N. School Street. The church is immediately north of Milner Library on the Illinois State University campus.
The pantry is open for distribution from 4–6 p.m. each Friday from August through May, and each Thursday in June and July.
Qualifying institutions include but are not limited to Illinois State University, Illinois Wesleyan University, Heartland Community College, and Paul Mitchell School.
Food insecurity is the limited or uncertain availability of nutritionally adequate and safe food, or the ability to acquire such food in a socially acceptable manner.
