The David J. Parent Scholarship was established in 1998 by his friends and family. It recognizes a student studying a foreign language, with preference given to applicants studying German.
Nick Boland is a German teacher education major. He shared how being recognized with the award has impacted his time at Illinois State University.
A senior, Boland has worked as a tutor and served as president of the German Club, through which he has collaborated with other language clubs at the University. With a focus on campus involvement and a clear passion for studying German, Boland said receiving the award afforded him financial peace of mind that allowed him to focus on studying what he loves.
When asked what drew him to studying German at Illinois State, Boland said that after spending the past 10 years learning the language, he knew he wanted to speak German on a daily basis. Boland draws inspiration from peers who share his enthusiasm for speaking and learning foreign languages.
After graduation, Boland is considering master’s or doctoral programs to further his education. He noted that receiving the David J. Parent Scholarship has assisted him greatly throughout his educational journey.
