These articles are often intended for a general audience, but for those wishing to take a deeper dive into the current state of scholarly communications, there are several conferences dedicated to that topic. Like conferences for other academic disciplines, these conferences can be found both in-person and virtually and occur throughout the year.
Chronologically, first is the Semantic Web in Libraries 2022 (SWIB22) Conference which is being held virtually November 28 through December 2, 2022. The SWIB Conferences began in 2009 and focus on Linked Open Data, especially in libraries and similar organizations. The conference program is available online, and the free registration and lack of required travel make it ideal for those wishing to dip an initial toe into scholarly communications conferences to see what they cover.
For those willing and wishing to travel, there are two additional conferences in 2023 that may be of interest. The Eighteenth Academic Publishing in Europe Conference—organized by the Berlin Institute for Scholarly Publishing (BISP)—will be held January 10-11, 2023, in Berlin, Germany. The conference will bring together attendees from all parts of the scholarly publishing world to “share ideas and understand progress in our sector.”
Finally, the Society for Scholarly Publishing 2023 Annual Meeting (SSP 2023) will be held in Portland, Oregon, from May 31 through June 2, 2023. SSP’s mission is to promote communication through the scholarly publication community, and the theme for the 45th annual meeting is “Transformation, Trust, and Transparency.” At the time of writing, the conference organizers plan to offer an in-person meeting as well as a virtual option for attendees.
