Distinguished Professor Ali Riaz was quoted in foreign policy magazine in a report titled, “Bangladeshis Have Had Enough”. The report highlighted the recent street agitations in the country demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and a new election. The report noted that the global pandemic and Ukraine crisis have contributed to the economic crisis the country is facing. Recently, Bangladesh requested $4.5 billion in loans from IMF.
“This is a crisis situation that has emerged out of the mismanagement of the government. Even if the COVID crisis was not there, even if the Ukraine crisis was not there, Bangladesh was still sleepwalking into this crisis,” said Riaz.
Riaz further mentioned that the incumbent Bangladesh Awami League has adopted the rhetoric of development.
“The whole idea since 2009, according to the Bangladesh Awami League, is that we need to prioritize development, which allows them to increasingly take away the democratic rights,” he said.
