On behalf of the original message by Mayuko Nakamura:
On Wednesday, January 11, 2023, an 18-year-old Indiana University student was stabbed multiple times in a horrific anti-Asian hate crime. Our thoughts go out to the victim of this horrible crime, to her family and friends, and to those who are affected by the racial violence. We ask you to stand with your Asian friends, classmates, colleagues, neighbors, and community members in condemning this act of hate.
We are outraged and saddened by this hate crime and we also worry about the well-being of Asian students, faculty, and staff at Illinois State University. We encourage everyone to check in with each other so that we don’t all feel alone in this struggle. If you need professional help, students can contact Student Counseling Services and faculty and staff can contact the Employee Assistance Program.
For those who are interested in supporting Asian students at Indiana University, the Asian Cultural Center at Indiana University accepts donations. Asian students are reportedly carpooling to avoid public transit and requesting escorts around campus since the incident.
During the spring semester, the AsiaConnect Anti-Racism Working Group is planning an event to continue engaging with the racial violence against Asian people. Until then, if you’d like to connect with us to talk more about racial violence, please contact AsiaConnect.
