The School of Music, Multicultural Center, and the Center for Civic Engagement at Illinois State University are co-sponsoring the Afro-Brazilian Percussion Workshop and Recycled Instrument/Sound Workshop Thursday, March 23. Both workshops are free and open to the Illinois State community.
Recycled Sounds Workshop: 11 a.m.- 12:30 p.m., Center for Visual Arts (CVA), room 302A
In this interactive workshop, renowned percussionist Dendê Macedo leads students to make music with everyday objects. Using items the students bring in from their recycling at home (soda cans, bottles, toilet paper rolls), Macedo teaches the students about recycling, rhythm, tone, and the art of making instruments. After a session of making and decorating their own unique instruments, the students learn to play as they create their own Recycled Sound ensemble. Please note: Participants in the recycled instrument workshop should bring recyclable items, such as soda cans, biscuit cans, etc.
Afro-Brazilian Percussion Workshop: 2:30 p.m.- 4 p.m., CPA Concert Hall
Participants will learn to play timbal, caixa, surdo, repique, xequere, tamborim, pandeiro and much more with a former member of Timbalada. Macedo will teach proper technique, exercises, tuning and maintenance, improvisations and soloing, traditional rhythms from candomble and samba de roda as well as the original rhythms and breaks from bands like Timbalada, Ilê Aiyê, and Olodum.
